WINDSOR — Shadow Minister for Children, Community, and Social Services, Lisa Gretzky (Windsor West) is calling for urgent reform to Ontario’s social assistance programs after a recent report revealed that current ODSP rules penalize recipients for living with a partner or roommate, making life even harder during a housing crisis.
“The idea that someone could lose vital support just because they choose to share their space with a partner or roommate is deeply unfair,” said Gretzky. “It’s punishing people for trying to build stability, and it’s out of touch with the reality of today’s housing market.”
Gretzky emphasized the need to update ODSP to reflect the cost of living and to stop clawbacks that discourage cohabitation or mutual support.
“People shouldn’t have to choose between keeping their benefits and keeping a roof over their heads. Ontario needs a social assistance system that lifts people up, not one that drives them further into poverty and isolation.”
We're so happy to have you on the team. We'll be in touch soon.
